Gadsby’s Tavern
A highlight on the list of popular Alexandria attractions, Gadsby’s Tavern has welcomed weary travelers to the city since the late 18th century. The tavern was named for Englishman James Gadsby, the tavern keeper from 1796 until 1808.
Today, visitors to Gadsby’s Tavern Museum will find two buildings, a circa 1785 tavern and the 1792 City Hotel. The original tavern currently houses the museum while the adjacent hotel building now holds the restaurant and ballroom.
In the early years of the nation, Alexandria was a bustling hub for business, politics and trade, and Gadsby’s Tavern was a social hotspot where patrons could share news, conduct business and talk politics while enjoying entertainment, food and drink. Famous visitors include: George Washington, James Madison, James Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and the Marquis de Lafayette.
Tour the grounds to experience American life during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and then sit down to a meal fit for a president at the period-style restaurant. View the restaurant menu.
