Old Town Alexandria, VA

Old Town Alexandria's roots can be traced back to the founding of the city in 1749. Alexandria's growth was spurred by its ideal location on the Potomac River, and soon became a bustling seaport and center of commerce.

Although the city was the longest occupied territory during the Civil War, Alexandria was sheltered from much of the fighting. Many buildings remained undamaged and are still visible today, making Old Town the third oldest historic district in the nation.

King Street

If Old Town Alexandria is the heart of the city, then King Street would be considered the heart of Old Town. From casual cafes and world-class restaurants to unique shops and eclectic art galleries, King Street has it all. Pick up a map and get acquainted with the area by stopping first at the Ramsay House Visitor Center, located at King and Fairfax Streets.

Explore this dynamic district to find the latest fashions in a Parisian-style boutique or search for that one-of-a-kind-item at one of the many charming antique shops. At Market Square, located in front of the City Hall, you'll find the oldest continuously operating farmers market, held year-round, every Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

As you stroll along King Street be sure to take time to explore the surrounding areas to enjoy all the historically significant attractions this city is known for. Some of these include:
